Urban Youth Theater

Swope Health Services BuildingSwope Community Builders invests in both physical and human infrastructure. Launched in 1999, Urban Youth Theater is a performing arts program for youth ages 7 to 17. Youth are provided performing arts activities outside of school with the goals of enhancing the growth, development and self-esteem. Designed for youth regardless of race, religion or ethnicity, Urban Youth Theater is a collaborative program with funding support from Greater Kansas City LISC through the Missouri Arts Council's Minority Arts Program, Muriel McBrien Kauffman Foundation, U.S. Department of Justice and U.S. Department of Education.

Under the direction of professional instructors, participants learn drama, dance, vocal music, play writing, production and stage management. Their theater experience culminates as cast members in live performances. Recent productions include "Follow That Rabbit", "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown," "The Wiz", and "Annie Junior".

Parents play an active role in Urban Youth Theater including volunteering on the Parent Advisory Group, costume preparation, stage design and creation, and helping children practice and learning their lines.

Widely recognized for high-quality programming and inspiring performances, Urban Youth Theater has drawn statewide recognition.
